October guide
Cider Donuts and Shoreline: An October Weekend in Lake Geneva
October is the month Lake Geneva quiets down without slowing down. The summer crowds have gone home, boat traffic thins out, and the maples along the shore start turning sometime in the middle of the month. Most years, color peaks around the third week. The lake stays a deep, cold blue, and the whole town smells a little like woodsmoke and cider.
It's also the easiest month to see more than the two or four blocks most visitors stick to. Here's how to spend a full October weekend, using spots on the Lake Geneva Passport and a few of the free, classic things that make the area worth the drive from Chicago or Milwaukee.
Friday, if you're coming up early
Mornings by the lake get cold this time of year. If you packed for the forecast and not for the wind off the water, stop at Clearwater Outdoor on your way in. They've been outfitting people for Geneva Lake for seventeen years, and the passport makes a fleece or a good hat an easy call. They're open weekdays only, 10 to 5, so get there Friday before they close.

Saturday morning: coffee, then the Shore Path
Start downtown at Inspired, a mission-driven coffee shop with gluten-free treats, where every cup supports their team. Get there early, before the sidewalks fill up, and grab something warm for the walk.

The path runs roughly 21 miles around the entire lake and stays open to the public even where it passes in front of century-old estates and private piers.
You don't need to do it all. Start at Library Park or the Riviera downtown, walk for an hour, then turn around. You'll pass boathouses, stone walls and lawns that roll right down to the water, and in October you'll often have long stretches to yourself.

Saturday midday: the maze and the farm stand
Both are open through October 31, then done until next fall. Don't wait.
Head out of town toward Geneva National for the most October thing on the passport. Pearce's Corn Maze is twelve acres cut into the field, and it's at its best on a crisp, clear morning before the Saturday line builds. Bring someone along.

On the way out, stop at Pearce's Farm Stand, run by the same family for four generations. It's where you stock up on apples, squash, pumpkins and whatever else is in season. If you're filling the trunk with pumpkins for the porch anyway, you'll hit $50 faster than you think. Eat at least one donut in the car. That's the rule.
Pearce's Farm StandFree half dozen donuts (any variety) with any $50 purchase in one visit. Valid through October 31.
If you're still out that way, Niche Cafe & Wine Bar at Geneva National pours forty wines on tap. It's an easy, low-key stop before heading back into town.

Back downtown, swap the car for a golf cart. Lake Geneva Cart Rental rents street-legal four- and six-passenger carts, and cruising the neighborhoods is the best way to take in the fall color without hunting for parking. Take the side streets, loop past the old lake houses, and stop wherever looks good while the leaves are still on.

Two downtown stops are worth parking the cart for. The Rabbit Hole is a curated shop of women's and kids' vintage, home décor and gifts.

Saturday evening: a church, then the lake
Topsy Turvy Brewery is the stop people tell their friends about. It's craft beer inside a 1910 neogothic church, three blocks off the water, stained glass and all. This is the one nobody finds on their own. The offer is buy one, get one, so try two.

For dinner, take a short drive west. The Lookout Bar and Eatery and 1878 on the Lake are both at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, right on Delavan Lake. The Lookout does waterside plates, and 1878 is classic lakeside dining. Pick one tonight and save the other for your next trip. The sun sets early in October, so book a table a little before six if you want to eat while there's still light on the water.

Sunday: a slower day by the water

Then walk off breakfast at Big Foot Beach State Park, just south of downtown. The park has wooded trails, a quiet lagoon and its own stretch of Geneva Lake shoreline. In October the trees overhead turn gold and the summer beach crowd is long gone. It's a state park, so plan on a vehicle admission pass.

In the afternoon, Studio Winery + Geneva Lake Distilling pours wine and whiskey until 4 on Sundays. It's the quiet version; live music is Friday and Saturday, so swap it into Saturday night if you want a song with your glass. Then start the drive home.

October in Wisconsin doesn't always cooperate. If the weekend turns gray, book a session at Board & Brush downtown, where you stain and paint a wood piece and take home something you made. Book ahead, so reserve as soon as you see the forecast. Pair it with Topsy Turvy or the Tap House afterward, and a rainy afternoon turns into the best part of the trip.
